3D Systems

In the world of tooling and prototyping our Amco partner is 3D Systems.

3D Systems, who create our 3D models and prototypes, have 88 digital 3D printers across 22 locations in the UK and Europe. They are able to 3D model and print in plastics such as nylon and metals such as titanium.

They specialise in the quick turnaround of 3D printed prototypes, low volume manufacturing in specific materials and on demand appearance models. These appearance models are printed from CAD files and are realistic physical models used for prototyping, evaluation, testing and exhibitions.

This process can make fully functioning models that look just like the finished and manufactured item and can also be applied to actual low volume manufacturing.

Prototyping is no longer limited to just 3D printing but augmented by sophisticated materials technology and subtractive manufacturing processes. – cutting away material from a solid ie CNC machining.

3d Systems can add finishing, colour matching and detailing to mimic the aesthetics and quality of the real product.

When it comes to functional prototypes, those that go a step further than look and feel, our Amco partner can develop functional prototypes that enable testing for functionality, manufacturing feasibility and materials testing. Functional prototyping enables testing, process evaluation and reduces time to days not months.

In addition, 3D s-systems can produce models using more recognized methods such as urethane casting, metal die casting, sheet metal working and plastic injection moulding.

Concept models and functional prototyping accelerate NPD ( New Product Development)   and enables iterative design. Prototype. Test. Analyse. Refine. Enabling multiple concepts and models to be developed until the desired outcome is achieved.

These concept models and prototypes can look and feel exactly like the finished design, including colour and the type of material.

Processes for manufacturing can be developed and explored using functioning models and these can be used to define assembly process, fit, weight and assembly processes as well as packaging.
